Family & Relationships

Stephanie Putty, née Foamwire, is the pierced proprietor of Moralton's lone sex and piercings shop, Buried Pleasures, as well as a recurring character. She is Reverend Putty's daughter and serves as a maternal figure to Orel.

Personality[]

Stephanie is the antithesis of Moralton's many hypocritical zealots. She's always willing to listen to Orel and her father and help them out of a rut, no judgement or strings attached. She's also one of the only adults in town that give decent advice and know what they're talking about. In conversation, she tends to use sarcasm to lighten the mood or mock others.

Stephanie is a lesbian. She uses piercing to cope with past trauma and maternal pangs. In addition to running the shop, Stephanie sings and plays the guitar.

History[]

Stephanie was conceived by Gladys Foamwire and her unwilling father. While she considers her childhood uninteresting, a significant event was the Arm's Length Dance, where she took Kim Latchkey (partly as an act of defiance against the reverend). While Stephanie had genuine romantic interest in Kim, her lover revealed that this was only a ploy to get Karl to notice her, and she never cared about Stephanie at all.

As an adult, she would set up business in Moralton. Seeing that Orel was an innocent person in need of actual guidance, Stephanie became friends with him. Orel remarked that she would "make a pretty good mom," which Stephanie was uncomfortable with but got used to. After she found out that Reverend Putty was her real father, he also became one of her confidants.

She later helped Orel bring Christina to the Arm's Length Dance to save him from the misery she endured.

Family and Relationships[]

Reverend Putty

Putty is Stephanie's biological father. Despite him being annoyed that she wasn't an eligible bachelorette, they started to bond as father and daughter afterward. She is patient and willing to listen to his troubles and they both share a snarky sense of humor. They're sometimes seen together in the latter half of the series.

Orel Puppington

Stephanie is one of the only adults who treats Orel decently and who wants him to be happy. Becoming a maternal figure to him was uncomfortable for Stephanie at first, but she got used to it.

Kim Latchkey

Kim feigned interest in Stephanie before the Arm's Length Dance, but she was visibly impatient with her and her request to start a serious relationship. As soon as her plan worked, Kim went back to tormenting her. Stephanie never forgave her for that. Kim isn't much nicer to her in the present.

Karl Latchkey

Stephanie isn't fond of Karl, as he joined in on Kim's bullying at the dance. Karl has little respect for Stephanie, but stopped by her shop to buy ridiculous-sounding toys.

Gladys Foamwire

Gladys was Stephanie's mother, but she wasn't close to her.

Trivia[]

  • She was originally supposed to be portrayed as a gay man, but Carolyn Lawrence suggested that the character should be a lesbian woman instead.
  • "Stephanie" means "crown" in Greek.
  • Her last names reference foam, wires and putty, which are used to make figurines.
